No FGM Australia
Welcome to the website of No FGM Australia, a not for profit organisation aimed at highlighting the existence of and abolishing Female Genital Mutilation in Australia.
This site contains news articles, resources for professionals working with women who have undergone FGM and need support, and women themselves who are seeking information and support due to FGM. The site is a resource for health professionals or educators who may know of girls at risk of FGM. A multi-agency approach to stopping FGM is essential.
This website is also for parents who are being put under pressure to have their daughters undergo FGM. While there are places where FGM legally continues as a cultural or religious practice, it is illegal in Australia and you have the full support of Australian law to protect your daughter from this unnecessary and often deadly procedure.
The opinions expressed take into account that FGM has complexities due to the cultural, traditional and religious issues surrounding its practice, however the primary view is that children have the right to be safe and protected from any form of abuse or violence, and that FGM is one of the most severe forms of child abuse and must be stopped.

Obviously I don’t support this barbaric act against women and children .
Thank you very much, NO FGM AUSTRALIA, your power gives me hope for a better future for our children and their children. Your work is so important.
These news from Europe perhaps should alarm us :

Germany (Ringel / Meyer; Tatjana Hörnle), bad enough, and unfortunately now even Great Britain are paving the way towards the so called “mild Sunnah” type, towards a legal FGM. We should stop this, any form of FGM or MGM should be banned everywhere.
Judge Sir James Munby can know that the circumcision of girls is religion, part of several hadith and many fatwa. The Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence) of Shafii madhhab and many Ulama of Hanbali madhhab regard FGM as wajib, i. e. as a religious duty. So khitan al-inath (sunat perempuan; FGM) is part of authentic Islam.
Muhammad said to the muqaṭṭiʿa al-buẓūr (cutter of clitorises) Umm ‘Aṭiyya:
أشمِّي ولا تنهكي
ašimmī wa-lā tanhakī
[Cut] slightly and do not overdo it
اختفضن ولا تنهكن
iḫtafiḍna wa-lā tanhikna
Cut [slightly] without exaggeration
Today several Muslim clerics promote a “mild sunnah” circumcision, who tells Judge Munby f. e. abot this fatwa. What is the Ruling on Circumcision for Women?
Circumcision is obligatory upon men and women according to us (i.e. the Shafi’is). (Majmu’ of Imam An-Nawawi 1:164) The circumcision is wajib upon men and women according to the rājih qawl of Shāfi’ī madhhab. Answered by: Sidi Abdullah Muḥammad al-Marbūqī al-Shāfi’ī. Checked by: Al-Ustāż Fauzi ibn Abd Rahman
I am in a little fear, that Europe will soon legalize some “mild” forms of the WHO-created category (FGM Type I, II,. III, IV). And again: any form of FGM or MGM should be banned everywhere.

Very worrying indeed, inspite of the UN’s attempts to change this conception that FGM or “female circumcision” is a requirement in Islam. eg http://www.unicef.org/egypt/Final_English_FGM_summary(1).pdf
Would love to help. Is there any way to donate time or money?
How to support it?
Obviously I don’t support this barbaric act against women and children!
Thanks for educating us on TED about this serious and disgusting act, it is against human rights and it must stop now all across the world. We are with you on this fight.
Thank you for your support.
Amazing woman and an amazing talk you gave. You inspire me. I’m extremely interested in gender issues in the context of economic development and although I was very much aware of FGM I never thought about it deeply. Your talk inspired feeling and thought which will translate into action. Not only from me but hopefully many others.
Hi Thank you very much for your comment and kind words. Would you like to be part of our campaign? Re the economics of FGM this article and this article by Hilary Burrage (sociologist and anti-FGM activist) give very helpful insights into economic basis for FGM.
I saw your talk on TED today. Thank you for putting this info our there. It was a problem I was unaware of and it needs to be spoken about. In South African schools a team called Famsa talks to young girls about what to expect as their bodies change etc and family planning. They should include info on this and teachers should also be educated to tell their children and the parents about its effects or be able to send them to a website like this one to find out more info. Thanks for campaigning!
Thank you! We also would like to see a similar program in Australian schools to empower young girls about their rights so they can take steps if they believe they are at risk of FGM. One girl has already been saved from FGM following education about FGM. Also teachers need to be better informed in order to safeguard girls who are at risk, and to care for those who may have been through FGM already. We will investigate the Famsa program to see if it can apply to the Australian context.
hi, I m from India. Very much moved with your TED video. Cant believe that such practice exists in our so called modern world. My support with you.
Thank you! We agree this practice should be relegated to the dark ages.
Khalidja, just watched your amazing TED talk. Keep strong in your mission for empowering and educating women and protecting children from the barbarity of FGM. We need women in Australia with your commitment, dedication and beauty. May God bless you and your work.
How can I help? Cannot fathom my own life without so vital apart of my body and soul.
Upon reflection, my initial comment could be read as insensitive. FGM is a theft and assault against personal integrity and human rights that outrages me who has enjoyed a fun lifetime of clitoral attachment. To suggest life without clitoral ownership impacts ones soul is perhaps another example of being clit centric because clearly the concept of soul is not necessarily orgasmic.
Apologies.
Dear Lia
Your comment shows enormous insight into the complex and devastating effect of FGM. One of the things a woman who has been subjected to FGM must learn to do is to understand her own sexuality as a woman without a clitoris. Cutting out the clitoris hurt deeply in many ways, physically, emotionally, psychologically, and indeed spiritually. Every human, man and woman, has the human right to sexual pleasure. FGM is aimed at destroying this right and therefore must be stopped. Everyone needs to be in the fight! We would love to have you join the No FGM Oz team.
